Even though the number of structure fires per year decreased over the past two decades, firefighters continue to die at the same rate in these incidents. Excluding the events of September 11, 2001, there has been an average of about 30 firefighter fatalities per year in structure fires in the U.S., according to data complied by the National Fire Protection Association. These fatalities result from a variety of causes, but one of the major causes is the absence of an effective emergency rescue plan before firefighters become trapped. In this program we will present information on why Rapid Intervention Teams are needed, how they are structured, and how they function outside of burning buildings. 17:33 min.

For both volunteer and career firefighters, one of the most dreaded experiences on the fireground is hearing a Mayday call. A Mayday call means that a fellow firefighter is in serious trouble and needs help - immediately! For firefighters in distress, their best hope of surviving the incident is being found and brought out before they run out of breathing air.
